Zakaria Awang

The formation of the Art & Design Faculty in Mara Institute of Technology back in 1967 gave birth the existence of a fine art course in 1971 that  became a catalyst to the Malaysian public sculpture movement and the Malaysian art scene as a whole. ITM was among the main institution that helped and trained new artistic talent that had develop the scene to what it is today.

The early 80s saw to the emergences of sculptor  from the institute, that had helped the public sculpture movement. Among them is the late Zakaria Awang, whom implements traditional and Islamic context in his  works, such as calligraphy, whilst quoting quranic text, using western mode of work making, such as installation, becoming the inspiration of many new artist that debuted throughout the 70s.
