Single Exhibition Balai Di Balai (Tatemonologue 2.0) by Xeem Noor
This installation is a follow-up installation to the artist’s solo show during her residency in Koganecho AIR Yokohama, Japan in 2025, titled “Tatemonologue”. While the first show focused on responding to the environment of the residency, this installation is about bringing home memories of that time and sharing spaces and moments of vulnerability in a reciprocal manner. A 1:1 replica of the Yamamoto Apartment in Koganecho (the space occupied by the artist during her residency) is built using the knitted pillars created there. The walls consist of printed fabric panels featuring images of the Koganecho AIR experience as well as the letters the artist wrote to the Yamamoto Apartment. In the centre of the installation space, the artist will place and perform a free-form crochet rug throughout the duration of the installation. Audiences are invited to either sit with the artist or contribute to the creation of the crochet rug. In exchange for the vulnerability and openness that the artist has portrayed in this created space, the audience is invited to observe their manners or “budi pekerti” as one would when visiting another’s space. This installation invites one to appreciate and contemplate the act of reciprocal intimacy, vulnerability and the culture of respect in building a community.
