Bullfight

Bullfighting, otherwise known as corrida de toros, is a national event and cultural tradition of Spain. In a gruesome show of bravery, athleticism and artful flair, bulls and bullfighters engage in a bloody duel.

In the plaza de toros (the bullring), bull and man stand as equals – animals risking their lives for the prize of pride, and a chance to live again. Yet, the audience cheers on for the killing of the bull, the lowly brute spurred on by instinctual aggression. The matador taunts the bull closer to its demise with a series of passes. Tradition has groomed an indifference to its death, undermining the primordial law that ‘all is equal’.

All forms of life have its rightful place in the world. We ought to rethink the ways in which we have existed amongst our fellow beings, and how some of those old ways may be hurtful. As cognitively developed species, we are able to ascend as the role of protectors instead.
